Refrigerator Care
It is well worth ensuring your refrigerator keeps on its round the clock pace this fall. The condenser coils will have gathered their share of dust and pet hair over the course of the year, making the unit labor for no reason. We suggest you:
- Get a vacuum to the condenser coils, typically under or behind the unit
- See if there are any cracks in the door seals to let the cold out
- Do a wipe down of the inside and dispose of what has seen better days
- Verify the settings on the freezer and fridge
- Put an ear to it for any new clicking or humming
Should you have an icemaker, run it through a cycle to be certain the ice is clear and clean; a lack of production could be a sign of a clogged line or something worn out.
Oven and Stove: Getting Ready for the Holidays
Thanksgiving is coming and your oven is in for a good workout. You do not want to find yourself with a heating issue when you have a full house to feed in the morning. Preheat the oven and make note of whether it comes up to temperature in the normal time. Uneven or slow heating is often an element or sensor issue. Burners should be wiped and checked for proper ignition. Also remove any residue from the bottom of the oven to avoid smoke and odors.
The Dishwasher
With all the extra meals come the dishes, so make sure your dishwasher is up to snuff. Hard water and food left to build up will put a cloudy film on your ware. To remedy this:
- Give the filter in the tub a cleaning
- Make sure the spray arms are free of obstructions
- An empty cycle with a good dishwasher cleaner will do wonders
- Wipe the gasket on the door and look for any grime
Washer and Dryer
Jackets, blankets and bedding will be going through the washer and dryer in droves this fall. Have them looked at before the season is in full swing. On the dryer side, the lint trap and vent duct need to be cleared after each load; besides being a fire risk, a buildup of lint robs the machine of efficiency. Check the hoses on the washer for any bulges or cracks and that they are secure. Keep the door ajar between cycles to keep the moisture and mold at bay.
