Woman Looking In Fridge

What to Check First When You Have a Noisy Refrigerator

When your refrigerator starts to make noises you’ve never heard before, or normal sounds become more frequent, you need to look for the source. Here are several common causes of refrigerator noises that you need to check out right away.

Buzzing Noises

If you notice a buzzing sound, it could be that the fans and/or compressor have gotten a clog. Condenser coils collect debris and will need cleaning every once in a while. Unplug the appliance, and wipe the coils using a damp cloth with soapy water, being careful not to get the working parts of the refrigerator wet. Make sure it’s dry before you plug it back in.

Clicking Sounds

The condenser coil also clicks when it’s gotten clogged. This happens when the compressor becomes overloaded. Remedy this situation by thoroughly cleaning the compressor and condenser coils. Another issue that causes a clicking noise is a start relay that’s no longer working properly and might need replacement. A professional should test with a multimeter to determine if the start relay is malfunctioning.

Grinding Noises

The recirculation fan may have a worn-out bearing, or it may be iced over if you hear grinding. A technician can replace the fan bearing if this is the issue. Otherwise, defrost your refrigerator by removing all the items from it and leaving it open a few hours.

Knocking Noises

A clogged or damaged evaporator fan blade may lead to knocking sounds. Try defrosting the refrigerator, and if you don’t see results, take off the back panel in order to get to the fan and clean it out. Use a soft brush to remove dirt, and if you see a bent blade, you’ll need to replace the evaporator fan.

Rattling

If you notice a rattling coming from the appliance, it could mean that the drain pan is loose. Other things that could cause this sound are a faulty compressor or condenser fan motor or a faulty defrost timer. You may need to replace the fan motor or defrost timer.

Ringing

When you hear a ringing sound coming from your refrigerator, it could mean that the compressor is faulty or that the condenser fan is dirty. First, look for dirt and debris buildup on the fan. If this isn’t the problem, have an expert look at the compressor to see if it needs to be replaced.
